Speakers

As an effort to educate and connect members of the CLSA with the knowledge and wisdom of Christian lawyers and other leaders in the community, the CLSA hosts regular speaker series throughout the school year.

For the 2007/2008 school year, we are very excited to announce that we have secured Mr. Jamie McIntosh, Canadian Director of the International Justice Mission to speak on international human rights and global justice.  The International Justice Mission is an international human rights organization dedicated to helping the oppressed around the world.  IJM's four-fold purpose is listed below.  For more information, click here to visit their website.

IJM's Four-Fold Purpose

  • Victim Relief - Relieve the victim of the abuse currently being committed.

  • Perpetrator Accountability - Bring accountability and just consequences under the law to the specific perpetrator(s) of abuse.

  • Structural Prevention - Prevent the abuse from being committed against others who are also at risk by strengthening community factors that are likely to deter potential oppressors, reduce the vulnerability of at-risk populations and empower local authorities to stop such abuses.

  • Victim Aftercare - Provide access to services to help victims transition to their new lives and to encourage long-term success.

In addition to the international human rights seminar we have slated on Wednesday, November 14, 2007, we are currently in the works of planning speaking panels on Integrating our Faith into Practice and Reconcilation & Peacemaking for second semester.  We are also in the works with securing Dr. John Stackhouse from Regent College as a speaker for second term.

To stay updated on our events, please subscribe to our email list by emailing ubc_clsa@yahoo.ca.  Our bulletin board in the Interaction Area will also be updated periodically.
