Welcome to the Home Page for the International Legal Aid
Conference
which was held at Green College, Vancouver, British Columbia
16-19th of June 1999.

The International Legal Aid Conference
Since its inaugural meeting in the Netherlands in 1994, annually the International
Legal Aid Conference has brought together a group of individuals who share an interest in
examining the challenges facing legal aid in the post welfare state.
Participants from around the world have been invited to attend the conference and to
bring academic, practical, and political contributions into the conversation. In
1997, the format of the Conference evolved to incorporate small group and informal
discussions. This year, the Conference has moved from Europe to the West Coast of
Canada and the edge of the Pacific Rim. It will feature significant local exposure
and will incorporate local participation during the Saturday Open Session, broadening the
influence of the conference panels and increasing the awareness of concerns about the
structure and delivery of legal aid in an increasingly complex and expensive legal
environment.
This conference has been made possible through the generous allocation of resources by
The University of Strathclyde Faculty of Law, The University of British Columbia Faculty
of Law, The British Columbia Law Foundation, The Ministry of the Attorney-General for
Canada, The Ministry of the Attorney-General for British Columbia, The University of
British Columbia Vice-President Research Fund, Green College, the English Legal Aid Board,
Department of Justice for Canada, Scottish Legal Aid Board, Osgoode Hall Law School.
