Welcome to the UBC Outlaws

Outlaws is the Queer Student Association at the UBC Faculty of Law. Our mandate is to promote a Queer-positive learning environment and to raise issues of interest to the Queer community. We welcome everyone - whether you're queer, an ally, or simply interested in issues of law and sexuality. The group will also be a valuable resource in your first year studies, whether it is for CANS, advice, or for answers to any other questions you might have about being at UBC law.

Past events include guest lectures on queer legal issues (such as hate crimes, HIV and the law, and transgender rights), panels on practicing as a queer lawyer, informal drinks with faculty, and fabulous Friday afternoon queer-ups complete with drag performers! In 2006/2007, we will also be partnering with LSLAP (the Law Students’ Legal Advice Program) to develop a free legal clinic for low-income members of the queer community. Also in 2007, we will be hosting a conference titled "Standard Margins: Emerging issues in Law and Sexuality", which will bring together Canada's leading and emerging scholars working in legal issues of Queer interest. The conference will be an amazing opportunity to explore contemporary issues in this area, and will be the first such attempt at building a national network with a student focus. A lot of work needs to be done to organize this conference, and if you are interested in helping out, come and see us.

Everyone is welcome!

Standard Margins: Contemporary Issues in Canadian Law and Sexuality
UBC St. John's College
"Standard Margins: Contemporary Issues in Canadian Law and Sexuality" is an exciting new conference that will provide a forum for the discussion of these emerging areas of the law and sexuality discourse. How has the law changed to reflect emerging voices and contemporary societal values regarding sexuality? How has sexuality continued to push the boundaries of the law? What rights and recognitions are given to those bodies and actions that do not fall within the norm? What is the norm? How has the law regulated those who seek to express their sexuality both in the public and the private spheres?

There are two primary goals of this conference. First, it will provide a forum for the presentation of current research and community initiatives in contemporary and emerging areas of law and sexuality. Established academics, community leaders and emerging scholars and students will gather to present their work and receive feedback.

Second, the conference will lay the foundation for an academic network focused on the issues of law and sexuality. Currently, there is no national network of scholars interested in law and sexuality, although there are a number of national community organizations that work in this area. The conference will provide a forum for individuals interested in this area to become familiar with other work being done in the country. Such a network will allow for the continuity required to maintain interest in these important issues of law and sexuality.
