Faculty debates
In keeping with the spirit of promoting intellectual discourse and opportunity for discussion, Phi Delta Phi is pleased to announce our inaugural faculty debate:
Get there early! Seating is first-come, first-served. Don't forget to bring your lunch. Check out the Facebook event too.
Debate topic: Be It Resolved That the Vancouver Police Department's senior management should resign in the wake of the 2011 Vancouver hockey riots.
Student involvement: in a unique twist, Professors Goold and Perrin have suggested a modified "UBC Law debate style". After opening remarks and initial rebuttals from the debaters, students in attendance will be invited to come to the microphones and offer their own arguments.
Each student will have a maximum of sixty (60) seconds to make their argument either supporting or refuting the debate claims. A rebuttal will be provided from the appropriate faculty debater, and the student will be given a chance to rebut in turn.
Student participants will join on a first-come, first-served basis. There will be a maximum of three (3) students arguing in the affirmative, and three (3) students arguing in the negative.
We look forward to seeing you all there. The event will also featuer the announcement of our winners for the Phi Delta Phi essay competition. For questions on either event, please don't hesitate to contact us.
